Causes

Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body.

Signs & Symptoms

Most people infected with the bacteria that cause tuberculosis don't have symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they usually include a cough (sometimes blood-tinged), weight loss, night sweats and fever.

Treat, Control & Prevent

The medications used to treat latent TB infection include: isoniazid (INH) rifampin (RIF) rifapentine (RPT) Certain groups of people (such as people with weakened immune systems) are at very high risk of developing TB disease once infected with TB bacteria

What Is Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is a contagious bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. TB mostly attacks the lungs (pulmonary TB) but it can affect any organ in the body (Extra Pulmonary TB). TB affecting the other parts of the body is not as infectious as TB of the lungs.

How TB Spreads

TB is spread through the air from one person to another. The TB bacteria are put into the air when a person with TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, speaks, or sings. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected.

TB is NOT spread by

Shaking someone’s hand
Sharing food or drink
Touching bed linens or toilet seats
Sharing toothbrushes
Kissing
